You should remember that all epithelia requires an underlying connective tissue layer to supply it with nutrients and remove waste products This is true, whether it be loose connective tissue as in the lamina propria of the digestive tract, or dense irregularly arranged connective tissue as in the dermis. Notice how dense the collagen bundles are in this image and how few cells are present, other than fibroblasts. Do you remember where else we saw dense irregularly arranged connective tissue?
