The Urinary Tract

I hope you recognized this as the kidney...after all, it is kidney-shaped. At the hilus, we find the renal artery (A), renal vein (B) and the ureter (C). Identify the glandular structure D. Hint: it is adjacent to the renal structures.
Scroll down to see an image of the right kidney demonstrating its retroperitoneal location (i.e., it lies between the body wall and the parietal peritoneum).

This is the right kidney (E), caudal to the liver (F). The descending duodenum (G), with the pancreas (H) in its mesentery - the mesoduodenum (I) - has been reflected medially to expose the kidney and the caudal vena cava (J). Could you trace the course of a metabolic waste product from the caudal vena cava to the kidney, through the kidney and out through the urethra? Give it a try!
