Clinical Simulation Center

Wish List for the Clinical Simulation Center
Materials, Models, and Equipment
Minimally invasive task trainers:

Laparoscopic trainer
Purpose: Provide opportunity for learners to develop their non-invasive surgical skills, which require a steep learning curve, prior to performing on live animals.
Manufacturers: Carolinas HealthCare System or Simulab
Donation request: $1500-3000
Canine endoscopy simulator
Purpose: Endoscopy is a critical skill for many veterinarians. It offers the potential of performing many procedures under less invasive means. However, endoscopy has a considerable learning curve. This model, along with the many homemade models we have created will allow students and trainees to develop greater proficiency at this skill prior to performing it on live animals.
Manufacturers: Rescue Critters!
Donation request: $3,187
Models:

Canine Abdominal Models
Purpose: Allow students to practice abdominal surgery.
Manufacturer: Vet Simulators
Donation request: $2500
Ultrasound Models
Purpose: Practice ultrasonography skills.
Manufacturer: SonoSite
Donation request: $500-750
Duplicate models of popular and in-demand female urinary catheter, intubation, and IV catheter models
Purpose: Some of these models are so in demand that we have conflicts in schedule over their use. They will also have predictable wear and tear and will need replaced given their high volume of use.
Donation request: $3,000-5,000

Haptic Veterinary Simulators: Cow and horse colic system
Purpose: Realistic rectal palpation models allow for safer (for student and animal) training of basic rectal palpation pregnancy diagnosis and gastrointestinal abnormalities. Learning outcomes have been documented to occur more reliably with this type of training and implementing their use strategically will optimize the use of teaching animals.
Manufacturer: Virtalis
Donation request: $90,000
Bovine Theriogenology Model
Purpose: This insert works with the dystocia model we already have to expand the palpation practice we can offer to our students.
Manufacturer: Veterinary Simulator Industries
Donation request: $5,200
Material and instrumentation:

High quality surgical instruments
Purpose: Expand and enhance the surgical instrumentation that trainees have available to use in the simulation center.
Donation request: $200-500
Taxidermy materials
Purpose: To create models not commercially available but that are indicated for veterinary medicine.
Donation request: $400-800
Program Development and Personnel Support

Simulation case development
Each case takes approximately 40 hours to create. With limited time and personnel resources this becomes a challenge and a rate limiting step in the advancement of the program.
Donation request: $750-900
Student club simulation efforts
Student clubs often want to have simulation as their club events. With external support more simulation would be possible for targets audiences.
Donation request: $750-900
Pilot projects for course and rotations
Simulation has a steep learning curve, both in case development and in implementation. To grow the program and support the college’s education mission, we need funding to develop cases that align with student classes and medical rotations, while supporting faculty who are at the same time developing their simulation skill set.
Donation request: $600-800

Sponsoring a peer teaching assistant
As core component of our optional clinical skills laboratory, students are trained in teaching methods and clinical skills to provide loss-stress instruction for their peers.
Donation request: $1500 per teaching assistant per semester
Research project support
To optimize the use of simulation in veterinary medicine, we need to pursue vigorous research in this area. Currently there are no specific sources of funding for pilot projects in this type of work.
Donation request: $2500-5000

Promotional and educational video production
To capitalize on some of the independent training opportunities, we need to provide students with a larger library of well-constructed instructional videos.
Donation request: $3,000-6,000
